All For One & One For All

Not that I’ve contributed much, if anything a few shaking heads.

But I like the idea of keeping RTR alive.

I’ve been trying to spend some time with modeling, as I’ve wanted to offer some Aussie Scenery & Rolling Stock, hopefully.

    Hopefully something will get sorted.

And just remember, things could be worse, Picture this:

    You’re a Siamese Twin,

Your brother, attached at your shoulder is gay.

    Your not.

He has a date coming over tonight.

    You only have one ass.

If this happens to offend anyone, how did you think I felt.

Got to go his got another date

If the unthinkable does happen… ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Maybe we can start up a Yahoo Group or something.

There are plenty of groups on Yahoo site that the software

they are promoting are still supported by the original

companies forums. We could think of it as a backup of

this forum and use it to hold any relevant files, pics,

or docs. It could also be used to support any add-ons or

utilities that BB chooses not to support but the community

    finds valuable.

Who out there has forum moderator experience (I don’t).

    And what do ya’ll think.

    Hi skatetrash,

this is a parallel way to Govs,Williยดs and this forum here. Iยดve allready an account on yahoo.

    Hi Governor,

Iยดll register soonest as possible to your forum.

    Map;

What I meant by the registry link still being active is that I followed the process of a new user by downloading a new copy of RtR and all it’s upgrades and expansions and then proceeded to register that copy. I did everything except click the submit button. This means that BrainBombers is still receiving pay for the program – unless the account to the third party collecting service was switched to the new distributor.

Someone is obviously still receiving the registration fee so someone still owns the rights to the program, it’s content and the method of distribution for both. It hasn’t been abandoned.

But that’s not to say that support for the community hasn’t been abandoned or that these services (download, collection, and forum host) are paid on a yearly basis and are just waiting to time out!

I saw this happen with Pixia Development and iBasic (an excellent Windows based BASIC language development package). The creator sold the program and rights to a large distribution company and shortly afterwards the very active community using that development software disappeared because the distributor had no interest in the Pixia web site. The users started their own forums but if one wasn’t around when it happened, one lost contact.

    Mr. Governor;

I haven’t had the pleasure of communicating with you before but I know of your contribution to RtR. Let me just defend the BB team for a moment for their trend towards North American expansion packs. In it’s infancy (as you probably know) most of RtR’s registered users were European or other than US (we’re talking 184 registered users with about 20%US). Here in the US, model railroad manufactures create scenery (generally speaking) based on Midwest architecture, mostly rural, from the early 20th century – a period and place where railroads were most important in this country. It was felt that by including a US expansion pack that more US users would register their RtR to be able to use these US objects.

Modeling a mock up of a commuter line from “Smallville”, Ohio to Chicago is as valid a layout as modeling the Orient Express or a lumber yard in the Alps.

I don’t know if the BBs were depending on me alone to provide them with this US expansion pack but being European themselves and not as familiar with US architecture, my offer to provide this service was welcomed by BB – but my work as a merchant mariner prevented me from completing the project in a timely manor. Hence, the prolonged discussions concerning US models.

I think the Iron Horses addition was due to a fascination on the part of one of the BB team members for that period of US history.

Anyway, at the moment I have approximately 100 US based objects that could be included in your layouts; ready to go; finished! but until I find out definitively what has happened to BrainBombers and RtR and who owns the distribution rights, I can’t offer these objects independently without violating copyright laws – not to mention the trust Brain Bombers placed in me three years ago.

In the mean time I’ll register on the Govenor’s forums – just in case!

By-the-way; It’s a content distribution law I would be violating. At the moment I own full rights to these objects until such time as BB would make them publicly available. It’s the “validation” utility that makes these objects usable that has copy rights and usage restrictions that I would be violating.

Hi Paul. Nice to finally meet you. Very nice site you have put up. It will provide a great safety net to this site. However, you are right about BB’s, or whoever may now hold it, copyright. Without specific permission, model and object sharing, or any modding, would undoubtedly PO someone. And that is a shame because you do fantastic work. RtR really needs more American architecture (yes, I’m a little biased) and just more “stuff” in general. But without being able to mod and file share, the possibilities for this software become very limited. Maybe if an active RtR community exists someone will notice and let this program open up to user modding and user expansion.

This forum was down yesterday and part of today. I thought that was it. Somebody reset it so there is hope.

I’d bookmark your page and will register soon as possible. 8)

    Hi Rob,

May be we all can make mods for RTR. Is it a theme or a combination of themes. Who’s faster or slower modeling skinning or make function mods for RTR. And where are the borders to modding for RTR? ๐Ÿ’ก I think RTR is open for this wide enoth to do it.

    I’ll check it out with 1.5beta. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ’ก

    Hay Rob

I wanted to provide a “dedicated” forum for RtR users in case the speculations flying around may be true. I know there are several other forums like the Governor’s web site and forums and Willie’s forums but I wanted a place that RtRers can call their own; not just be “guest” in another community.

If the speculations are true, this actually may open the door to exactly what you have mentioned.

I agree that the Brain Bombers marketing strategy most likely worked against them. Look at the success of Sim City, The Sims, MS Flight Simulator – Combat Simulator and Train Simulator. These and others owe a lot of their success to the fact that the users can freely add and share content to these programs. Its one thing to model a layout and watch the train run the track – it’s another matter entirely to watch a train pull into a station you designed.

I never quite understood Brain Bombers desire to maintain control over this aspect of the program for registered (paying) customers when it wasn’t a direct form of profit for them.

Anyway, all is not lost. Time will tell, but in the mean time those that want to start building a library of objects that could be added at a later date, I intend to write a couple of tutorials on 3D model building for DirectX drivers and how to export them for RtR, how to texture efficiently, etc. and post them in this “other” forum.

These objects may not be usable individually just yet, but if nothing else we as a group might be able to make an expansion pack that would be a combined effort. If we could just hear something from the BB team.

If Brain Bombers has indeed sold all rights to the program to someone else, maybe the new distributers will free up this restriction.

Modifications to ini files and content files such that would not interfear with BB’s distribution protection scheme are perfectly legal as long as they are either kept private to the author or offered free to the public.

Anyway, I’m not trying to take traffic away from this or any other forum, just provide another place to exchange ideas.

    Aye Captn’

Very nice, great idea.(Minus the photo ๐Ÿ˜† )

after seeing your picture, my whole fantasy of you being the Captn’ from Gilligan’s Island, still stranded on an island with a computer made from a hollowed rock some bark etc, made by the professor, hooked up to a palm tree made into the shape of a satellite dish which you then use to hack onto the Net to get onto the forum, has just been blown ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

    But thats my problem
